While you're there
Avignon, the city of Popes
Avignon is located in the Provence region, on the left flank of the Rhône River and is home to more than 500,000 people. Avignon can be reached from main cities like Paris (2h40 trip), Lyon (1h trip) or Marseille (30 minutes trip).
Avignon invites you to share its lifestyle and superb heritage. With its bridge, the Palace of the Popes, testimony to its prestigious past as Capital of Christianity in the Middle Ages, Avignon offers grandiose architecture, with several monuments ranked among UNESCO’s World Heritage. Avignon offers numerous possibilities for sightseeing, activities and events. Tourists can also discover plenty of attractive shops, Provençal cooking, local specialities and the Côtes du Rhône wines… The Mont Ventoux, the lavender fields and all the beauty of Provence is on the doorstep of Avignon.
The unavoidable landmark in Avignon would be the Palais des Papes which was the Popes’ residence in the 14th Century. It is the most important gothic palace in Europe and is ranked by UNESCO as a World heritage site. Visitors can discover 25 different rooms: reception halls, cloister, chapels and the Pope’s private apartment with invaluable frescoes. The Palais des Papes is located in the old quarter, in the heart of Avignon. Next to it, you will discover the Musée du Petit Palais, a unique museum in Europe with over 300 Italian paintings from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. While you are there, do not miss the visit of the Rocher des Doms garden, which overlooks the Rhône River and offers a scenic view. Behind the Musée du Petit Palais, you will find the Pont Saint Bénézet, a bridge of legend, built in the 12th century before the common era and also classified as a UNESCO World heritage site.
The originality and the diversity of events characterize the Avignon way of life. When you arrive, ask for Rendez-Vous, the monthly events calendar of Avignon published by the Avignon tourist office. You will find in it all the current events: exhibitions, concerts, festivals, lectures, walks and of course theatres. Avignon has an opera and many permanent theatres which offer quality shows all year round.
In the summer, Avignon has been the international meeting point for contemporary creation for over 60 years. The Festival d’Avignon is one of the oldest and most famous theatre festivals in the world.
Avignon possesses treasures of craftsmanship and small shops that offer a wide selection of olive oils, honey from Provence, nougat, chocolates and Côte du Rhône wines. Don’t forget to taste the speciality of the city - the Papalines, a delicacy composed of chocolate and oregano liqueur.
You are in Provence! Markets are part of the lifestyle. Open in the morning, Tuesday to Sunday, the covered market, les Halles, is a place where you will find local products: fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, olive oil and other cookery specialities of Provence. You can also walk round a refreshing and charming flower market or an antique market on one of the squares.

Unfortunately, during my ride, some teenagers were in the cart, heard loud music or talk loudly. At some point they even smoke in the toilets. The inspector walked only once during the ride inside the cart (although the smoking issued was quickly resolved and the passenger brought down the train at the closest station.

We had a goog trip from Paris to Avignon. We found our allocated seats without any problem. The signs at the station are very helpful. It would be an improvement if information was also in English as a lot of English speakers used the trains. Train was on time. Toilet on the train was a bit smelly.

It was my first time to travel by TGV and my experience was more than expected. Right on time, however with a short delay on return (the train was 30 min late), but disregarding this fact it was very convenient and pleasant.

This train was stopped at a station before it reached St Malo due to a problem with the track ahead. We were kept sitting in the train for some time - at least half an hour - before suddenly everyone started getting off. We do not speak French and struggled to understand what was going on. We collected our luggage and followed other passengers to the Bus Station where we again waited some time - at least 20 minutes - before buses came to transport us the rest of the journey to St Malo. We had to ask staff to explain what was happening in English as there was little consideration for passengers who did not speak French. Water was handed to passengers as they embarked on the buses. We were especially disappointed as we only had a little more than 24 hours to spend in St Malo and lost at least 1 1/2 hours of that time because of the additional travel time caused by the delay. We were handed forms to fill in to receive compensation for the inconvenience caused but have yet to establish if we will have part of the cost of the fare reimbursed. We appreciated the fact this was offered.

The station in Avignon is GREAT, car rental return is handy, but the kiosk to obtain your ticket, if you purchased online, is where I had a problem, it was asking for your name but not your LAST name, so I didn't know not to put my whole name in and it wasn't working, I had to wait in line to get help. I would suggest you change the kiosk prompts to be more clear and specify "last" name. Otherwise I would give very high scores to TGV!!!

Very comfortable, convenient and easy are the best words to describe our trip. It certainly was far easier than flying and much more enjoyable. You had more room and didn't feel as constricted. Flitting from one city to the next but still seeing the country side was a bonus. We had heard that travelling by train was a lot easier than flying now we can see why.

Me and my family are tourist of France, we had a wonderful time in your country, we took the TGV from Avignon to Paris on 1/10/2013. However, we do not know about your first language - French; we only know about English, an international language. We found that there is a big problem on the indication of the compartment number in the platform. Once the train is approached, we noticed that we were standing on the wrong location for entering into a respective compartment, we then keep running to an appropriate location for entering into the train. While we were transferring our luggage from platform to train, the door suddenly started to close without any notification or announcement in English, but only French. We can only use our hands and tried hard to stop closing the door, unfortunately we also found that there is no automatic sensor on the door, the door keep closing even though my luggage was stucked on the middle of the door. As a courteous reminder, please add a clear announcement for your passengers in English on the platform as well as the train, so that everyone can have a clear instruction on what they should do and where they should go. Thank you for your attention.
- "Super service" Lynda m. 01/10/2013
The TGV was slightly delayed arriving in Lyon. We had two connections further to that which we missed. Arriving in Bourg en Bresse too late for a train to our final destination that evening. The station master and his team were wonderfully helpful and organised us a taxi, at no charge to ourselves to take us to our final destination 60km away. First class service with a smile. 5*'s to the French railways network. We would like to to send them an email if you can supply us with details.
- "Fast train to south of France" Richard m. 24/09/2013
Our family of 4 had a fantastic trip on the TGV. By booking early we got real value for money, the 2nd class seating was great and comfortable as we where seated at four seats with a table and the staff friendly. Would do again as long as we booked early to get the good price. Richard McCormick, New Zealand.
- "Trip to the south of France" Stephen h. 23/09/2013
I purchased the tickets on-line it was an easy experience. The whole station experience of boarding and finding the car and seat was easy. I would recommend purchasing on line every time. No difficult validation of tickets required and a good price for advance purchasing
- "Great way to travel" Irminia a. 18/09/2013
This is my second time to travel to Paris via TGV. First was from Berne, Switzerland and this time from Avignon. Both trips were on time, very smooth, very quiet and was able to sleep/rest. Toilets were clean. Enough space for travellers with suitcases. Very convenient.
- "A map and a choice" Angie a. 13/09/2013
I just would like to suggest to show the seat position before reserving the seat on a map because frankly i had to search for mine. Also to give a chance for choice if possible for ones favouring lower or upper seats. thanks
