Netherlands

The national railway company of the Netherlands is known as the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). The Netherlands has over 2,800 km of railway network. Train tickets for trains operating in the Netherlands can be booked in advance. International trains connect the Netherlands with neighbouring countries such as France and Belgium. Book train tickets to visit main cities of the Netherlands by train. Dutch cities including Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven are all served by trains.

Cityscape

Cycle along Amsterdam’s canals and through the Museum Quarter before heading south to Rotterdam’s post-war architecture. Take the Netherlands’ NS train to The Hague, travel north to Groningen’s lively student ambience or visit cosmopolitan Maastricht in the surprisingly hilly south.

Landscape

Travel by train to the Netherlands’ northern provinces of Overijssel and Drenthe and cycle through verdant fields and swim in clear lakes. Walk on the seabed during low tide from the far northern mainland to the Waddeneilanden (West Frisian Islands). In freezing climes, skate along frozen canals.

Take Home

Shop for vivid blue ceramics in Delft, Vermeer’s hometown, and browse the country’s biggest clog factory in Beltrum. Buy Dutch cheeses in Gouda and Edam and buy flower bulbs from Keukenhof.

Eat & Drink

Sample raw herring, stop by traditional pancake houses (pannekoekenhuis) or try patatje oorlog, chips in mayonnaise, ketchup, peanut sauce and onions. In traditional ‘brown’ cafés, order a beer with bitterballen, meat croquettes, or uitsmijter, an open fried egg, ham and cheese sandwich.

New Perspective

Book a train to The Netherland’s south-west Friesland province and stay at Stavoren’s De Vrouwe van hotel where four giant wine casks have been turned into en-suite hotel rooms.

Customer reviews

  • "Amsterdam to Paris"
Good trip, comfortable. Ticket was a bit expensive though.
  • "Comfortable train ride"
It was the first time taking Thalys from Amsterdam to Paris and it was a nice experience. It was comfortable. Since we booked our tickets in advanced, it was value for money and we were allocated to seats that we wanted.
