Don’t Miss
Le Parc de la Tête d’or is a huge park featuring a lake, a zoo containing over 1000 animals, a botanical garden and some fantastic memorial statues. You could easily spend a few days here and admission is free.
Retail Therapy
The best shops and department stores are found in the Presqu’île area. For something more original, try the Rue Auguste Comte and the Antique Dealer’s Market (Cité des Antiquaires). If you prefer everything in one place visit Europe’s largest town-centre shopping mall, the Part-Dieu.
Eat and Drink
Lyon cafes specialise in traditional cuisine, so for good value head to a bouchon and taste Lyonnaise sausages, duck pâté or roast pork. While you’re there, work your way through the world-famous Rhône Valley wines.
Hidden Gem
Find the traboules, the tunnelled passageways through ancient buildings. They were built as shortcuts to transport the silk made in the city in rainy weather. There are more than 300 and the longest is at 27 Rue du Boeuf.
Day Trip
In the south of France the best thing to do is jet off on a wine tasting tour – visit Beaujolais and sample the Fleurie, Brouilly and Chiroubles. Your picturesque train journey through medieval villages, rolling hills and incredible chateaus will add to the flavour.
